From Benoa or Serangan, Nusa Lembongan is about 45–75 minutes and Nusa Penida about 1–1.5 hours by fast motor yacht, or roughly double under sail. Menjangan in the northwest is a full-day passage from the south and is better reached by an overnight leg or a northern departure.
The eight-hour budget
Every day charter spends its hours in four ways: getting there, stopping, moving between stops and getting back. A standard eight-hour day gives you roughly five usable hours at anchor once the return leg is accounted for. Groups that plan four destinations end up seeing four transits. Two stops is comfortable, three is achievable if they are close together, and four is a schedule rather than a holiday.

Times vary with sea state, current and vessel. The Badung Strait between Bali and the Nusa islands runs a strong tidal current, and a crossing against it can add a substantial part of an hour in each direction — which is why the same trip feels different on two consecutive days.
Tides and current decide the timing
Current is the reason a good skipper will suggest a departure time rather than accept yours. Slack water windows around the Nusa islands make snorkelling comfortable and the crossing quicker; the same anchorage two hours later can be untenable for swimming. Ask when the skipper wants to leave and why; the answer is usually a tide table, and following it will improve the day more than any upgrade to the boat. Day shapes that work
- Classic Nusa day — 08:00 departure, snorkel stop on the Lembongan side, lunch at anchor, a second bay in the afternoon, back by 17:00.
- Slow south day — a single anchorage close to Serangan, long lunch, paddleboards and swimming, home before the afternoon breeze builds.
- Sunset slot — three to four hours from late afternoon, one stop, drinks under way for the return.
- One-way east — sail to Padang Bai, disembark and return by road, which removes the return passage entirely.
Departure points and the time they cost
Benoa and Serangan are the two working harbours for most of the southern fleet, and both sit within easy road distance of Seminyak, Canggu, Nusa Dua and Sanur. Traffic, not sea miles, is the variable that most often delays a departure: allow an hour from Canggu in the morning and more during holiday periods. Sanur is convenient for the Nusa islands but has limited berthing for larger vessels, and Padang Bai in the east shortens the crossing to Lombok while adding a two-hour road transfer at the start of the day.
What a day boat cannot do
It cannot reach Komodo, Flores or Lombok’s outer islands and return. Those need multi-day charters, and attempting them in one day converts a holiday into a delivery trip. It also cannot outrun weather: if the afternoon breeze is forecast to build, the skipper will shorten the plan, and that call is not negotiable.
