Transfer time is the number that decides most days
Bali road time is the hidden cost of every charter. As a rough planning guide from a 07:30 hotel pickup, allow 20–30 minutes from Nusa Dua or Jimbaran to Benoa, 30–45 from Seminyak, 45–60 from Canggu, and 90 minutes or more from Ubud. Serangan runs 10–20 minutes from Sanur, 45–60 from Seminyak and similar to Benoa from Ubud. Traffic through Denpasar between 07:00 and 09:00 can add half an hour to any of these.
If your group is staying in Sanur or east Denpasar, a Serangan departure can hand you 30 to 45 extra minutes on the water for the same day rate. If you are in Nusa Dua or Jimbaran, Benoa does the same in the opposite direction.
Boarding: the part people underestimate
At Benoa you generally walk down a concrete pier and step aboard. Bags are handed across, there is shade nearby, and a guest with limited mobility can usually manage with an arm. At Serangan the boarding depends on the vessel. Some berth alongside; others send a tender, and a beach launch means wading a few steps in shallow water with your bag held up. That is entirely fine for a fit group and a genuine problem for others. Ask for a photograph of the actual boarding point rather than assuming.
Where each one puts you at 09:00

For a south or west Bali day — Uluwatu coastline, sunset cruising off Jimbaran, or a long lunch offshore — Benoa is the natural base and the extra transfer distance is irrelevant. For east Bali towards Padang Bai, both work; Serangan trims a little.
Tide, draft and the practical constraint
Serangan’s approaches are shallower. Deeper-draft vessels and some larger catamarans have a tidal window there, which is why an operator may quote a departure time that seems oddly specific. That is not inflexibility; it is water depth. Benoa has no equivalent constraint for the boats in normal charter service.
The practical consequence is that a Serangan departure sometimes cannot be moved by an hour to suit a late guest, while a Benoa one usually can. If your group’s punctuality is uncertain, that is a real consideration.
Cars, parking and the return leg
Benoa has organised parking and covered waiting areas. Serangan is simpler, with parking closer to the water and less shelter. On the return leg the difference reverses: a Serangan arrival at 17:30 puts a Sanur-based group in their hotel before dark, while a Benoa arrival meets evening traffic heading north.

- Choose Serangan when you are staying in Sanur or Denpasar, when the Nusa islands are the point of the day, when you want the earliest possible arrival in the bays, and when the vessel is a speedboat or day catamaran.
- Let the boat decide when a specific vessel matters more than either — most quality vessels have a fixed home berth and will not relocate for a single day booking.
