For photography, the useful boat is not the fastest one. Look for a wide uncluttered foredeck, a clean white or teak surface without branding, a swim platform at water level, low vibration at rest, and a crew willing to hold a heading for the light. Shoot the first two hours after sunrise or the last hour before sunset, and confirm drone permission and any commercial-use terms in writing before booking.
The boat is a set, not a vehicle
Charter listings sell speed, range and capacity. A shoot needs none of those. It needs surfaces, lines, space to move, and a crew who understand that the boat may spend two hours doing almost nothing in one position. Selecting on the usual criteria produces a fast boat with a cluttered deck and a captain confused about why you keep asking him to turn around.
What to look for, in order
| Feature | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Wide flat foredeck | The main stage on almost every boat shoot |
| Clean surfaces | Operator branding, sponsor decals and printed cushions date a shot instantly |
| Swim platform at water level | Water-level angles, in-water shots, safe camera handovers |
| Netting or trampoline | Distinctive foreground and a natural place for talent to sit |
| Shade you can move | Bimini or awning that can be struck for a clean sky |
| Low vibration at rest | Long lenses and video are unforgiving of a running generator |
| Interior with windows | Wet-weather cover and a second look without leaving the berth |
Catamarans generally win on all of this: level decks, wide beam, big trampolines and a swim platform on each hull. The trade is that they look like catamarans in every frame, whereas a classic phinisi brings timber, rigging and a distinctly Indonesian silhouette that no catamaran can imitate.
Light, and the only two windows that matter
Bali sunrise sits roughly between 06:00 and 06:30 and sunset between 18:00 and 18:45 through the year, with little seasonal swing this close to the equator. The consequence is a hard rule for boat shoots: the first two hours after sunrise and the last ninety minutes before sunset. Midday sun at 8 degrees south is directly overhead, and it puts unusable shadows in every eye socket on deck.
Morning is usually the better half. The water is calmer, the anchorages are empty, and the light is clean before the afternoon haze. It also means a 05:00 pickup, which is worth agreeing with talent before it is agreed with the boat.
Motion and the seasickness tax
Nothing ends a shoot faster than a green model. A catamaran at anchor in a protected bay is stable enough for most people; the same boat beam-on to swell in the Badung Strait is not. Plan the shoot inside sheltered water where possible and cross early when conditions are at their calmest. Seasonal patterns are set out in our month-by-month sea conditions guide.
Two practical measures: brief everyone to take a remedy before departure rather than after symptoms appear, and keep the shooting order flexible so the deck work happens while conditions are good.
Drones, permissions and the awkward questions
Drone footage is usually the reason a boat is hired, and it is the item most often left unconfirmed. Ask three questions in writing: does the operator permit drone launch and recovery from the vessel, will the crew slow or hold heading for the shot, and are there airspace or local restrictions at the specific location you have in mind. Some anchorages sit near flight paths or restricted areas, and a crew that has worked there will know.
Recovery is the practical risk. Hand-catching a drone on a moving deck is standard practice for experienced operators and a very expensive mistake for everyone else. Nominate one person for it and rehearse it once at the dock.
Commercial use, and being straight about it
A private day rental and a commercial production are different contracts. If the images are for a brand, a hotel, a fashion label or stock, say so at enquiry. Operators may ask for a location fee, a release, or proof of production insurance, and some will refuse to have the vessel identifiable in a competitor’s campaign. None of this is obstruction — it is the same logic as any location hire, and it is far easier to resolve before the deposit than after the shoot.
Where a crew appears in frame, get their consent. Where the vessel name is visible, agree in writing whether it may be shown.
Schedule that works
- 05:00 pickup, gear loaded and checked at the pier.
- 05:45 departure, shooting from the moment the light arrives.
- 06:00–08:30 the golden window: foredeck, swim platform, drone.
- 08:30–11:00 in-water and detail work as the sun climbs.
- 11:00 back alongside, or reposition for an afternoon block.
A full day gives you both windows with a long midday break; a half day should be the morning one. The practical reach from each departure point is mapped in what fits in one day, and a quiet boat helps for video — see a day without engine noise.
Booking it
Tell us the shoot type, the crew and talent count, whether a drone is flying, whether the use is commercial, and the light window you need. Send it to our team on WhatsApp at +62 811-3941-4563 or email [email protected] and ask for vessels with clean decks and no branding. If privacy from other boats matters for the shoot, our privacy notes cover the anchorage and timing side.
Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of boat is best for a photoshoot in Bali?
One with a wide uncluttered foredeck, unbranded surfaces, a swim platform at water level and low vibration at rest. Catamarans suit most shoots; a phinisi brings timber and rigging that a catamaran cannot imitate.
What time should a boat photoshoot start?
In the two hours after sunrise, roughly 06:00 to 08:30, which usually means a 05:00 pickup. Midday sun sits almost overhead in Bali and produces unusable shadows on deck.
Can we fly a drone from the yacht?
Often yes, but confirm it in writing with the operator along with whether the crew will hold a heading for the shot and whether the specific anchorage has airspace restrictions. Nominate one person for hand recovery.
Do I need to declare a commercial shoot?
Yes. Brand, hotel, fashion and stock work is a different contract from a private rental, and operators may ask for a location fee, a release or production insurance. Resolving it before the deposit is far simpler than afterwards.
