Ask the operator directly: what is the longest passage this vessel has completed in the last two years, and with which captain?
Range and fuel
Ask for tank capacity, cruising burn per hour and the resulting range at cruising speed, then compare that with the longest leg of your intended route plus a reserve. Fuel availability away from the main ports is limited and quality varies, so serious expedition operators plan bunkering as a fixed point in the itinerary rather than an assumption. Water, power and the length of the stay
- Watermaker output — litres per hour against guest and crew consumption; a shortfall shortens the trip.
- Tankage — fresh water and grey/black water capacity, since remote cruising means holding waste rather than discharging casually.
- Generators — ideally two, so a failure is an inconvenience rather than the end of air conditioning and refrigeration.
- Solar and battery — reduces night-time generator hours, which matters for sleep at anchor as much as for fuel.
- Refrigeration and freezer volume — determines how long fresh provisioning lasts between market stops.
Communications
Mobile coverage disappears quickly east of the main islands. Expect a combination: a satellite broadband system for data at anchor, a satellite phone or messenger as the fallback that works when the dish does not, plus VHF and single-sideband radio for vessel-to-vessel and shore contact. Ask what the vessel does when the primary system fails, because a single point of failure in communications is also a single point of failure in medical response. Medical readiness and evacuation
The essentials are a comprehensive medical kit, oxygen with enough volume for a long transfer, an AED, crew with current first-aid training, and a written evacuation plan for each leg of the route — including the nearest airstrip, the nearest hospital and the nearest recompression chamber. Local knowledge in Indonesia does not transfer neatly between regions. A captain with fifteen years in Komodo may be new to the Banda Sea. Ask how many times this crew has run this route, in which months, and what they would change about it.
