The honest picture: charging happens at base
Renters often imagine an electric boat pulling into a cove and plugging in somewhere. That infrastructure does not exist in Indonesian waters, and it will not for years. Every electric or hybrid vessel working out of Bali charges where it sleeps — on a marina pontoon in the Benoa harbour area, at a private mooring with a shore cable, or at an operator’s own yard. The charge that matters to your day was put into the batteries overnight, before you woke up.
That is not a limitation so much as a planning fact. A diesel boat can refuel almost anywhere fuel is trucked; an electric boat carries its whole day in a battery bank. So the conversation with the operator moves earlier: instead of asking how far the boat can go, you ask what the boat will leave the dock with and what that buys in hours at cruising speed.
What the dock actually supplies
Indonesian shore power is 220V at 50Hz. Marina pedestals in Bali commonly offer 16A and 32A single-phase outlets, with 63A available on some commercial berths. Larger yards and commercial piers sometimes carry three-phase supply, which is what makes an overnight full charge realistic on a bigger battery bank rather than a two-day affair.

Figures are indicative and vary by berth, cable and the vessel’s own charger rating — a boat with a 7 kW onboard charger cannot absorb more than 7 kW no matter how generous the pedestal is. Solar is the second plug
The panels on a modern electric catamaran are not decoration. A hard-top array on a 45–50ft catamaran commonly runs somewhere between 2 and 6 kWp, and in Bali’s light a well-oriented array will return several usable kilowatt-hours across a clear day. That does not propel the boat by itself at speed, but it is often enough to carry the hotel load — fridges, water maker, lights, fans, entertainment — which is the load that quietly drains a bank while you are anchored for lunch.
Two things move solar yield in practice: cloud and shading. October to March brings more cloud, and an awning or a badly furled sail across the array costs more output than most guests would guess. Crews on electric boats spend real attention on this, which is why the array is usually kept clear even when it would be convenient to hang something over it.
The generator question
Most electric vessels working commercially in Indonesia are hybrids rather than pure battery boats. There is a compact diesel generator aboard, sized to charge the bank rather than to drive the propellers. It exists for the day the plan changes: a longer crossing, an unexpected current, a guest who wants two more hours at Nusa Penida.
Ask how the operator uses it, because the answer tells you what kind of day you are buying. Some run the generator only as a reserve and will shorten the route rather than start it. Others treat it as normal range extension. Neither is wrong; they are different products. What charging means for your rental day
- Departure time is real. A late start eats the charge window if the boat is on a same-day turnaround between a morning and a sunset slot.
- Range is agreed, not improvised. Route changes on the water are possible but they are a battery decision, not just a navigation one.
- Speed is the biggest lever. Energy use climbs steeply with speed; dropping two knots can add a surprising amount of cruising time.
- Anchoring is free. Time at anchor costs almost nothing on an electric boat, which is why these vessels suit long, slow days in one or two bays rather than sprint itineraries.
How this changes the boats you should shortlist
